How many coats are required?
- One coat is necessary.
How to apply evenly?
- Apply thinly as possible, extending the application as far as possible so that it can be rubbed in.
As the product is highly absorbent, it can be wiped dry immediately after application; apply with the right hand and wipe off with left hand in succession.
Wipe thoroughly to leave no oil on the surface (touch with the palm of your hand and wipe dry until it is smooth and not sticky).
How much time is required to dry?
- 「純正荏油」 takes approximately between 48-60 hours to dry.
- The product is highly absorbent, it can be wiped dry immediately after application; apply with the right hand and wipe off with left hand in succession.
- ‘Takumi no Toyu – 久米蔵色・墨色’ takes approximately between 24-48 hours to dry.
- ‘Takumi no Toyu – Saisoku’ series takes approximately between 12-24 hours to dry.
※’Takumi no Toyu – 久米蔵、墨色’ has been discontinued. - Colour and finish may vary and drying time may be significantly delayed depending on the type of wood, season and location. Always apply a trial coat to the same peice of wood to check drying and finish before use.
It’s still not dry after 4 to 5 days.
- Too much oil may have been applied or not wiped off enough.
Wipe the oil on the surface off well with a dry cloth.
Open a window for better ventilation and to speed up the drying process.
What is the colour?
- ‘Takumi no Toyu’, 純正荏油、’Takumi no Toyu – Saisoku’・濡色はクリヤーですが、水に濡れた様な、いわゆる濡色になります。
NOTE: Apply a trial coat to the same piece of wood to check drying and finish before use. - ‘Takumi no Toyu – 久米蔵’ has a colour similar to the old timer (dark brown) and ‘Takumi no Toyu – 墨色’ contains natural black pigment that is similar to sumi (Chinese ink).

Successor product for ‘Takumi no Toyu – 久米蔵’ is’Takumi no Toyu – Saisoku’ series 煉瓦色, and for ‘Takumi no Toyu – 墨色’ is ‘Takumi no Toyu – Saisoku’ series 玄色. - ‘Saisoku’ series has colour variations as listed: 玄色 as black, 煉瓦色 as brown, 栗色 as dark brown, 山吹色 as yellowish brown, 淡雪色 as white, 赤錆色 as brown-ish red.
NOTE: Woods with high oil content, such as hinoki and pine, can be partially shaded in colour.
What is the colours and lustre like?
- It brings out the natural colour and gloss of the wood (white wood stays white, dark-coloured wood darkens).
- The grain of the wood will be enhanced.
Is there any odour?
- It has a distinctive smell of えごま油.
Will the odour disappear?
- Drying ensures that the odour fades (it will be no longer noticeable after about 10-14 days).
- Individuals may react differently to the smell, please make sure they do not react to the smell before using the product.
NOTE: Adequate ventilation is recommended.
How much area can be applied?
- Varies according to wood material and surface finish.
- ‘Takumi no Toyu’: Approximately 30㎡ per 1ℓ.
- 純正荏油: Approximately 25㎡ per 500ml.
- 久米蔵色、墨色は：1ℓ当り20～30㎡（約6坪／12畳〜9坪／18畳）が目安です。

What is the maintenace period like?
- We do not specify a particular maintenace period. Please reapply whenever you are concerned (e.g. dryness, fading).
- A rough guide is one year (daily dry wiping rather than reapplication can bring out the natural gloss).
How do I clean a painted floor?
- It is the same as normal cleaning.
Dust with a vacuum cleaner and wipe with a tightly wrung cloth or mop. Wipe dry to give it a subdued shine.
The floor got scratched.
- To a certain extent, scratches can be made less noticeable by applying a partial coat of paint.
- For bigger scratches, apply #240 or higher sandpaper to remove scratches.
Apply ‘Takumi no Toyu’ once the sanded part becomes white.
Any warning?
- It’s wood-penetrating oiling.
Please do not apply too much.
Wipe dry thoroughly to avoid leaving oil on the surface. - Over-application and inadequate wiping off can cause the product to remain sticky and not dry.
※’Takumi no Toyu’ 久米蔵色 and 墨色 (discontinued), ‘Takumi no Toyu – Saisoku’ colour series uses natural pigments, therefore the colours may fade or bleed onto clothes when scrubbed even after it is dry.
What should I do if the child licked the oiling?
- It is a natural vegetable oil and does not contain harmful substances, but is not food grade. In very small quantities are safe, but please consult your doctor as soon as possible.
How do I dispose the used rags?
- Rags used for application or wiping off may ignite spontaneously.
Incinerate immediately or soak thoroughly in water, place in plastic bag, seal and dispose of as combustible waste.
Can it be used for plates?
- ‘Takumi no Toyu’ is based on えごま油, it is a natural vegetable oil without solvents, preservatives, etc. It becomes an oxidised polymerised form that reacts with oxygen in the air to dry, with almost no evaporating components.
Oxidised oil is not good for your health and as this product is not food grade but for construction, we do not recommend its use on wooden tableware as a manufacturer.

How much area can be applied with 1 bottle (300ml)?

What items can it be used for?

Painted wood parts (e.g. wooden flooring, countertop, furniture), plywood flooring, vinyl covers, plastic parts. - × Inapplicable
Unpainted solid wood, cork tiles, specially painted floors and furniture (e.g. lacquered, mirrored), glass, mirrored surfaces, fabrics, leather and etc.
What is alkaline ionised water?
- Alkaline ionised water is produced using a unique process without the use of chemicals.
It is safe and is also used in process foods (e.g. rice balls ‘onigiri’ and bread).
If you have sensitive skin, we recommend wearing gloves while using the product.
The spray nozzle clogs occasionally.
- To prevent blockages, turn the nozzle to ‘OFF’ after use and wash off or wipe off any liqud remaining in the nozzle with a cloth.
- In the event of blockage, remove the spray part from the bottle and soaking it in lukewarm water (40°C approx.) will considerably relieve the problem.
